Tooth Decay Prevention

No one enjoys the idea of tooth decay. That said here are a few simple yet important tips on how to properly do tooth decay prevention. In essence, tooth decay is the actual breaking down of the tooth structure and affects both the enamel as well as the inner layer of the tooth known as the dentin. Tooth decay happens anytime food containing sugars or starches such as bread, cake, soda and candy is left on the teeth for an extended time. When this happens, bacteria forms, and produces acid which eventually turns into plaque that adheres to the teeth.

Brushing After Each Meal

The acids in plaque eventually dissolve the tooth enamel creating small holes in the teeth that in time become cavities. Here are some important ways of preventing tooth decay. First, always brush your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste. Brushing after each meal and especially prior to going to bed protects the best. Secondly, clean between teeth each and every day using dental flaws. And finally, rinse with a good mouthwash that has antiseptic ingredients as a way to kill bacteria that causes plaque.

Reducing the Risk of Tooth Decay

Other ways of preventing tooth decay include eating a balanced and nutritious diet. Limit sugary snacks and carbohydrates such as pretzels and chips. These food items become sticky and remain on the teeth especially when not brushing. Another great way of preventing tooth decay is to check with your dentist about supplemental fluoride. This is intended to strengthen teeth and may require an office visit. Another good strategy for reducing the risk of tooth decay is to have dental sealants placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. This can greatly reduce the chances of decay.
