What is Orthodontics

If you are eager to know what is orthodontics, simply stated, it is a type of dental care that corrects teeth and the jaw when they are out of position or misaligned. Orthodontic care can treat both functional and aesthetic related problems for patients. Even cases where the jaw does not close properly they can effectively be treated by an orthodontist. An orthodontist is a dentist who has gone on to receive additional training. This training may include specifics such as the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of bite related problems.

Jaw That Simply Does Not Fit Together Correctly

Most notably, orthodontic care is tasked with correcting a wide range of bite problems or malocclusions. Other examples of how orthodontics can help are when a patient has crooked teeth or teeth that are misaligned or crowded. Malocclusions are a major concern because they can result in an upper or lower jaw that simply does not fit together correctly. When this happens a host of secondary conditions can occur. For example, muscles connected to the jaw may become stressed, overworked or fatigued.

Appliances Such as Braces

Orthodontic care is designed to correct developmental abnormalities as well as injuries caused by trauma. The main objective is to always achieve a better and more functional bite for the patient. An orthodontist will use a wide range of appliances such as braces or a technology known as Invisalign to achieve the desired results. The main premise of orthodontic care is to apply steady and gentle pressure on teeth so they slowly and consistently move into a better position within the jaw. In some cases more extensive treatment may require the use of headgear or palatal expanders as part of a more complete treatment program.

Precise Adjustments

These technologies and other techniques are used more frequently in children as a way to help a growing jaw develop in a more healthy way. This ultimately prevents more extensive and complicated orthodontic problems later on in life. An orthodontist will make frequent and precise adjustments to appliances, wires and elastics each time the patient visits. A typical orthodontic treatment protocol will last anywhere from 18 to 30 months. The good news for patients is that orthodontic care is well tolerated and provides for very minimal levels of discomfort.

Consult With their Dental Care Provider

Young adults and parents of young children should consider visiting with an orthodontic care provider as necessary to address crooked teeth, misaligned teeth or other similar problems. Those having trouble chewing or even speaking or who feel that their jaw simply is not closing the way that it should, may wish to consult with an orthodontist. Finally, those who have been involved in some type of traumatic accident that has resulted in serious damage to the teeth or jaw should consult with their dental care provider or orthodontist to find the solutions needed to return functionality and a more pleasing appearance.
