Foods to Avoid with Braces

Getting your teeth perfectly aligned to achieve that beautiful sparkly smile seems easy; until you realize the struggle behind it. The journey with braces is not easy, depending on the extent of missing teeth, but it pays off once you see the results.

When you have braces, you need to be careful about the type of food that you eat. While some foods

Here are a few food items that you need to avoid with braces.

Sticky Foods

As the name indicates that these are sticky foods that tend to stick in your teeth. They may cause pain when they come in contact with braces. One of the difficulties with braces is that you cannot clean your teeth thoroughly as you would do without braces. The sticky foods may penetrate your teeth and cause more damage instead of repair. If they remain attached with braces, they can lead to possible prolonged side effects and cause cavities, resulting in more pain and damaged teeth. So if you have braces, try to avoid foods like candies, toffees, or caramel food items.

Crunchy Foods

Crunchy foods can get stuck in your braces and sometimes may knock them off due to the force needed to chew them before swallowing. Some foods like a hard pizza crust, crunchy food rolls, and popcorn can instantly cause damage to the brands of braces. Your teeth are aligned with braces, so they naturally become weak and lose their strong connection with gums. You can damage them by asserting even a little pressure with your teeth.

Solid Foods

The biggest damage that you can cause to your teeth and braces is by having hard foods. These food items can cause pain in gums and teeth, bend the braces' wires, and cause poor alignment. Putting instant force to break food particles with your teeth may damage the braces and make them fall off easily. This can also cause missing teeth, which braces cannot help with. So try to refrain from eating foods like raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, and chocolates.

Chewy Foods

Chewy foods, even without braces, cause toothache if not cooked and chewed correctly. They require a lot of force and effort to swallow, like raw, cooked meat. Foods that are both chewy and sticky, like bubble gums, can also get stuck between braces. While they can be removed from teeth quickly, it is not easy to clean them out once they enter braces' bands. The only possible way is to get them removed professionally and replace them with new ones.

Final Thoughts

Nothing comes easier as it seems. Eating foods that ruin your braces can only prolong the process of repairing and aligning them. Apart from solid and sticky foods, you still have a lot to eat and fulfill your cravings. Fresh juices and milkshakes are a healthy option, and for solid foods, you can go for porridge or bread until you get them off from your dentists.
